St Saviour's Church Westgate-on-Sea

News and Events

  1. Essential repair work

The church building will be closed to the general public from Mondays to Fridays with effect from 24th July 2018. This is due to essential internal repair work.

  2. St. Saviour’s Church PCC awarded National Lottery support

In May 2017, St. Saviour’s Church in Westgate-on-Sea issued a press release, which confirmed a Heritage Lottery Fund first round pass of a two part process which resulted in a grant of £21,500 being awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund for this development stage.

Now we are delighted to report that St. Saviour PCC has been awarded a second round pass grant of up to £142,200 towards a project costing £191,111.00. We appreciate that this grant money is raised by National Lottery Fund players to whom we are most grateful.  This conservation project aims to save the beautiful Victorian Church and its stained glass windows and to continue to provide a welcoming facility and hospitality for the many people who come specifically to discover the long heritage of the Church and town and to enrich their knowledge by studying the educational displays and archive material from within the Church.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the conservation work includes repairs to the supporting stonework of the 12 high level windows, conserving the original Victorian glass and leadwork in the windows and installing wire guards, overhauling the rainwater goods system, upgrading the Church’s website, including a new virtual tour of the Church, and producing a new educational display depicting the heritage of the Church. Modern facilities for refreshments and hospitality for the community will be provided. Work will start at the end of July and will be finished by the middle of December, 2018.

Brenda Carter, the project contact person says: “We are so grateful to the National Lottery Players for their support of our project.  As a focal place for the use of the community of Westgate-on-Sea, it is up to us to ensure the building provides a centre for the next 100 years to continue the success started 134 years ago.”

Many different groups are pleased to use the Church for their activities, including St. Saviour’s C.E. Junior School, the local Piggy Bank Nursery, St. Crispin’s Infant School, Westgate Art & Craft Group, the Friends of St. Saviour’s, Bell ringers, other historical societies and the Friends of Kent Churches. The Church also provides a meeting place for The Westgate Heritage Centre, which has over 200 members and is growing.  It was formed 11 years ago when the need for people to discover the heritage of Westgate-on-Sea became evident. With the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund we will be able to continue the Church’s history for many years to come.
